Alright Oppo, it has been a pretty long time since I've seen this round here (maybe it's because I've been on oppo pretty sporadically since the last Kinja update but moving on).
Anywho I had Comcast installed today (the Extreme 105 package) and was pleasantly surprised, while it doesn't compare to the 500Mbps down 100Mbps up hookup I had with FiOS out easy it's still surprisingly fast, and over the promised speed!
Join the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (I guess this is new, makes it easy to compare anyway!) and lets see what you can get! I'm sure those of you on university networks can put many of us to shame!

You got me on ping time! My speeds have been steadily decreasing and ping times increasing as it gets later in the evening here. I've been with FiOS so long I forgot that that happens! But... I got spoiled. I'm extremely happy with Comcast so far (way more then I expected to be), the scheduled the appointment for the next day, the tech arrived right on time, he was knowledgeable and fun to talk to, and best of all my bill is only $80 for 12 months (jumps to $115 after that but I'm sure I can talk them down). Compare that to the $300 I was paying for 500Mbps from FiOS and, while the cost per Mbps still swings toward FiOS I have to say $80, and even $115 isn't at all shabby. Plus as Comcast (Xfinity, whatever) increases there top tier speed I stay at the top, without a bill increase, with Verizon my bill went from $120 a month for 100/60 up to $300 for 500/100... while the speedtests were great to show off to strangers on the internet I never really saw a huge difference once I crossed the 100Mbps point.

That ping time is really high compared to when I had FiOS. Are you on wifi? I can't ever remember a speedtest where I had a ping above 10ms. Granted I was very close to one of there giant datacenters (I could see it from my house) so maybe that's not the norm.

I think I give Comcast about $60/month at home. I'll post that one later. This line costs us quite a bit here at work. I wish I could just try FiOS. The Comcast techs around here are fantastic, as is the local call center (especially late at night), but the contractors they send as installers SUCK. I had two of them at my house for much, much longer than they should have. The line was terrible and they insisted that I owned the modem. I only told them once that I was renting it. Free modem. Had a real comcast guy come back the next week and fix my line. Good times!

I've heard great things about Comcast Business class, I have a customer who is considering getting it for his plant, it'd probably be 10-15 people and 20 or so machines (the machines are VERY low data so they're negligible). How many people use your connection? Are you happy with it?

I was really surprised, my tech knew exactly what he was doing, had knowledge of the development, and even fixed the original installer's mistakes (the house was pre-wired for cable in 2003)... like not labeling any of the lines at the junction box. He was done with me early enough that he sorted and labeled all the lines in the box before he left. He said there was so much criss crossing and bad connections my neighbors will probably see a boost in speed as well! He also knew the technology side of it really well, hell we talked about the differences between FiOS and Comcast and he admitted the downfalls (Comcast will eventually hit a hard ceiling with the current network that will be much lower then Verizon's). Best of all when it came time to "optimize" my computer he pulled the CD out of the case, saw me cringe, chuckled, and tossed it in my garbage can.
I'm sure he's better then most but damn this guy was good.

You got a good one, then. They are generally paid by the visit, so the sooner they get all dozen visits done, the sooner they get to go home. He's supposed to charge you for the wiring too, sorting and labeling. And I pull out sharp weapons if I see the CD.

Don't get all high and mighty, you know damned well youtube sucks for everyone else too! In all seriousness though, I did find a fix for crappy youtube (trust me even with 500Mbps down I was constantly waiting for videos to buffer). Check out "Yousabletube Fix". For me on chrome it consisted of me installing the Tampermonkey extension and copy/pasting a script into it. I've been nearly trouble free since! Hell you might even get to see a video in 360P!

I got a deal on the standard $250 install for Extreme 105 to begin with too! I hard-balled them down to $100 before agreeing to sign up. Honestly he probably could've left it be and it would've still worked for me at the advertised speed, but I guess he's just a nice guy! I did buy him lunch though, I ordered a pizza and he showed up right after it got delivered, I wasn't gunna let the dude watch me eat. He said he never gets offered food/water/anything from most customers which surprised the hell out of me, I guess some people don't understand that the installer is a real, living, person as well. He did say the situations he dreads the most are older houses with older coax, he said it generally starts with a test that he knows it's going to fail, he explains he has to run a new drop, they get angry at him (which makes no sense... he didn't run the original coax 20 years ago!), and he has to work with a pissed off customer huffing and puffing around. Honestly if he had told me there was an extra charge I would've been fine with it, I definitely got my $100 worth.

Nice. I am also very generous to people that are installing/fixing, even before I had been an on-site tech. It just makes sense. They are always surprised and that makes me lose even more faith in humanity.
My parents had one of those houses with old coax and a creepy basement that the line came into. The first Comcast guy there had a whole lot of fun.

Since you work at a university, and I've never attended one maybe you can clarify this for me. Why do universities have such fat pipes? I mean I understand there's a lot of people on it but if that were the case you'd expect more average speeds because it would balance it out from users. Is it something with research? Am I missing something totally obvious?
![]() 11/01/2013 at 18:07 |

It boggled my mind that he was surprised I offered him a few slices of pizza... I ordered a large because it made sense (I could get a couple meals out of it), but I would've felt like the worlds biggest douche if I had just gorged myself while he worked. Was I paying? Yeah, but he was still providing me a service and furthermore was a guest in my home, it's manners! I've always had the assumption that people who act like assholes to those in the service industry have never worked a job anywhere near that in there life. I think everyone should have to work 1 month in retail/food services/some other service job where you get bitched at by dumb people.

It's not that I didn't like them, it's just that they didn't have wheels. And I don't really like most concept cars in general.

Yeah, just water feels like a lot to ask sometimes. I've never been offered food at someone's house, and home PC/network repair can take a couple hours. I've been offered Jimmy John's by a couple businesses. They were my favorite, and got excellent service and some extra time. Funny how that works.
And yes, everyone should be a service professional for a while.

Well I'm not in "Detroit" I'm in the burbs but YAY DETROIT! I actually just got a place back here after 4 years on the east coast, I've gotta say I like the area a lot more now. Downtown has a lot of fun events/bars/general things to do besides go to a hockey/football/baseball game. Plus the area has extremely cheap cost of living (though it's going up quite a bit compared to 08-09), and Michigan tends to be full of generally nice people, and that's not just me saying that I read it on the internet once somewhere.
![]() 11/01/2013 at 18:10 |
|
It's a little different for me since I'm in the main administration building and our classes are mostly online, and the actual classrooms are elsewhere. For me its a case of not many people needing much bandwidth but we have it just in case, I guess since we have 10-20 conference rooms with teleconferencing capabilities.
Most dorms I've lived in as a student actually didn't have very much bandwidth. The buildings with classrooms and offices for faculty generally had pretty good connections though.
![]() 11/01/2013 at 18:18 |
|
Ahhhh well knowing that it's slightly more impressive since it's a connection that works pretty much anywhere. I'm surprised smart men in glasses haven't figured out a way to correct sat-com latency issues yet. I mean I know it's limited by some pretty strict physical parameters but we've done more with less! I've had a sat-phone for a while because I occasionally go back country skiing out west or snowmobiling far out in the UP of Michigan and it's a nice backup to have in case our group has problems. The couple times I've used it (it's $10 to connect a call and $1.50 a minute after that!) there was a distinctive 1-3 second lag between when I stopped talking and when the person heard me. It made for some very awkward over-lappy conversation, granted the latency didn't bother me since it was a phone I could use to call for help if I was anywhere with a clear view of the sky, which is impressive. I was also impressed with the sound quality, a lot clearer then I expected.

Ah, makes sense, I guess my assumption that all universities had wicked internet came from my friends that went to Michigan Tech, but considering the schools specialty I can say it's a safe assumption it was an outlier to have insane speeds in the dorms.

Just butting in: Mine is also comcast business, just doesn't show up that way. I have had great experiences with them during my on-site tech years and never a bad experience. Lines, speed, and support are good.
![]() 11/01/2013 at 18:29 |
|
My satisfaction with them varies. Sometimes it's pretty good, but there have been times where I wanted to throttle the "tech" on the line, like when we increased the number of static IPs we have and they put in the wrong subnet mask. I had to find that problem for them. Right now there about 20 people on it, but not everybody is on the internet, of course. I do wish we could get faster upload speed as we have outside people accessing our servers and that can get bogged down.
![]() 11/01/2013 at 18:37 |

I seem to be limited by my 100Mbps network connection. I'll have to try it again from a Gigabit port.
![]() 11/01/2013 at 18:42 |
|
I don't know about the latency but I know my company throttles back the speed a ton. They give us the internet so we can send data to town, anything that is left over we can use but it's ungodly slow. I'm not sure smarts will really help you that much with the latency issue. Any data coming in has to go to geosynchronous orbit and back, even at the speed of light that distance is nontrivial. There is a minimum of about half a second of latency under ideal conditions just because of the distances involved, plus whatever latency you have on the ground.

Ya know, plus you get the added badassness of saying "I live in Detroit" to people in other parts of the world and you get instant street cred. Quickly followed up by the question "How shitty is it there?" or "I bet it sucks". Yet, every person I brought out here from Philly (I brought 3 different friends out for the Woodward Dream Cruise) was totally blown away, and 2 of the 3 have return trips planned for the NAIAS in January (it helps that I have a free place for them to stay and access to the industry review but I digress). Detroit's awesome, and possibly the most underrated city in the US, this bankruptcy crap certainly doesn't help but it's a cold day in hell when people think it's fair to compare the people in a city to the government in that city. If you're ever up my way or vice versa I'll gladly buy you a beer (or whatever beverage you prefer).

Yeah, I pretty much knew that, but my point was think of all the things we (the human race) deemed totally impossible in our history. Flight? Fuck that we're too heavy it'll never work! Your response was what I already kind of figured but didn't have the knowledge to back up, but my point was if 6.5billion people put there heads together I bet a solution could be found. Or maybe it couldn't, I admittedly have no idea what I'm talking about and I'm literally talking out of the side of my head.

Verizon "Enhanced" DSL.
Being spoiled by FiOS while I lived with my parents, DSL leaves much to be desired. However, it's still a lot better than the DSL service we had before FiOS came around and as I live alone now, the low bandwidth isn't too much of a problem. Upload could be better, but at least I can stream HD video from Netflix and YouTube with no problems.
Haven't tried online gaming through it, though...

Guy came by from Comcast, said he'd triple my speeds, give me better TV package AND a HD DVR. For $15 LESS a month. No contract.
I'm in Provo, UT. I think Comcast/Xfinity is skeeered of Google Fiber coming first of the year. Pretty good deal.
![]() 11/02/2013 at 07:19 |

$15 less then the comcast deal you already had or from another provider? Comcast really loves the 12-month deal on a 24 month contract so make sure you're not going to get some eye bleedingly high bill in a year.
![]() 11/02/2013 at 20:22 |

$15 cheaper than what I was paying with Comcast. I know. I grilled him about it. Asked him 3 separate times..."no contract?" And he said "yep, and the price never goes up." Actually told him that I was planning on switching to Google Fiber when it's available. He said "no problem."
Couldn't refuse.
